good bye changsha

packing light has never been my forte. i had big ambitions to pack light for this trip since i knew some of our travel would be by train. the idea of negotiating a chinese train station ( no elevators) with my mom, the girls and luggage is intimidating. i failed miserably in packing light and then added to my luggage with my morning at the hongquiao market in bejing. linda also added to our load so the result is that we will look like a small caravan with wheeled luggage and backpacks when we leave changsha today.

we're taking the high speed train south to guangzhou. the girls are excited to stay at the white swan hotel and swim in the outdoor pool. initially i wasn't planning to stop in guangzhou but now it seems like a nice mellow respite from the intensity of changsha.

this portion of the trip has been interesting and hard in many ways. ruby's past will forever be a mystery. i hope i can help her sort out her feelings about her visit here. i can say with certainty that it is unlikely we will return to this city. hunan has many beautiful spots and perhaps we will visit one of them the next time we are in china but it will be up to ruby.
